Once again, as we enter a further period of lockdowns and restrictions, our spirits will be lifted with Sewing Bee coming to the rescue. And it certainly sounds like we’re in for a Christmas treat!
Joe Lycett presides over the show again and it all kicks off on Boxing Day at 19:45 on BBC1 with the first of the two part special. Sara Pascoe, Dr Ranj Sing, Denise Van Outen and Shirley Ballas put their sewing skills to the test, competing in three challenges set by Patrick and Esme.
The first, the pattern challenge, is to make a pair of festive pyjama bottoms, the perfect loungewear for Christmas morning. Next up, it’s the transformation challenge where they are asked to make a festive fancy dress outfit for a dog. Keep an eye out for Shirley’s Covid-dog outfit which completely steals the show with its insanity! For their final challenge, the made to measure, the four celebrity sewers must make a perfectly fitted dress to wear on Christmas Day.
Away from the sewing, we’ll be treated to Christmas skits, songs, dance routines and even a barber-shop ensemble with hilariously dressed-up dogs!
Next up, it’s time for The Vivienne, Lesley Joseph, Sabrina Grant and Sally Philips to show off their sewing skills (or lack of them), in the second special on New Year’s Eve at 20:00 on BBC1. The celebrity sewers will make a child’s party skirt in the pattern challenge. The pattern for this easy make can be downloaded at thegreatbritishsewingbee.co.uk So why not download it and sew along with the celebrities!
They then have to turn old clothes into a recognisable pantomime character in the transformation challenge. Oh yes they are!
And then, finally, for the made to measure challenge they are asked to create a New Year’s Eve party dress that evokes memories of a particular New Year’s Eve, with surprising results. The Vivienne goes for gold with a glittery figure hugging dress! I’m having flashbacks to my 80’s gold lame dress! Hopefully The Vivienne won’t walk out!
And if that isn’t enough The Vivienne closes the show with a special song in which Joe, Patrick and Esme make a surprise appearance.
But who’s going to come away with the best celebrity sewer accolade? Who’s going to feel the pressure in that workroom? We are just going to have to tune in and find out. Best of luck to all the contestants, and if any of you have now caught the sewing bug, try out some of our easy to make projects!
